How Long Does a Bathroom Renovation Actually Take? Inside the Real Four-Week Process.

A proper full bathroom renovation takes three to six weeks — and any builder worth
hiring will tell you exactly why. The "renovated in two weeks" promise you've seen advertised isn't a sign someone is faster or smarter. It's a sign they're skipping the steps that decide whether your bathroom is still watertight in five years.
But the timeline isn't really the question worth asking. The better question is what actually happens inside those weeks — because that's where you find out whether you've hired a craftsman or a cowboy. Most of the work that determines whether your renovation lasts is invisible the day it's finished. It only shows itself years later, behind the tiles, when it's most expensive to fix.
So here is the whole thing, week by week, exactly the way it's done on a Scalso site across Sydney's North Shore. No mystery, no shortcuts, and nothing hidden behind the wall that you'll pay for later.
Why a full bathroom can't be renovated in two weeks
Here's the part the fast-and-cheap operators don't want you to do: the maths.
A bathroom is a system of layers, and several of those layers are chemical — they cure, and curing takes time that cannot be rushed. The screed has to cure before waterproofing can go on. The waterproofing membrane needs multiple coats with drying time between each. Tiling can't begin until that membrane is cured. Adhesive and grout then need their own time before the room can be used.
Stack only the mandatory drying periods in a single bathroom and you are already looking at six to eight days where nothing can happen but waiting — and that's before demolition, set-out, rough-in, tiling and fit-off are even counted. This is why Australian Standard AS 3740, which governs waterproofing of wet areas, makes a true two-week strip-out and rebuild physically impossible.
So when someone promises two weeks at a low price, they're not offering you a better deal. They're telling you which corners they cut. The smartest thing you can do is ask one question: "How long do you allow the waterproofing to cure before tiling?" The answer will tell you everything.
Now, here's what those weeks actually look like when it's done right.
Week 1: Protection, demolition, and the two inspections most builders skip
Week one is the most important week of the entire job. It looks like the least glamorous — no tiles, no tapware, no reveal — but this is where the renovation is quietly won or lost.
It starts before anything is touched. Your home is wrapped first. Hard floors and carpet are covered, walls and handrails padded, glass and joinery protected. Dust barriers go up on extension poles, sealing the work zone room-to-room so the rest of your home stays clean and livable. This level of site protection is rare — and it's deliberate.
Then demolition — done with respect for the house, not a sledgehammer free-for-all. This is where most renovations make a mess that they never fully clean up. We don't. HEPA-filter extraction runs the entire time, pulling fine dust out of the air as it's created rather than letting it drift and settle through your home. Old fixtures, tiles and substrate aren't smashed out and left in a heap — they're removed cleanly, carried out along the protected paths, and the debris is cleared as we go. By the time demolition is finished, the room is stripped back to its bones and swept clean. It's a small thing that tells you everything: a Scalso site at the end of demolition day looks better than most building sites do at handover.
The first inspection happens the moment the walls are open. With everything exposed, we assess what's really there — is the timber frame straight, are there any signs of old water damage, is anything hidden waiting to cause a problem? If there's a surprise, you hear about it straight away: in person if you're home, or by a recorded video walkthrough if you're not, so you can see exactly what we're seeing. If there's nothing to flag, we confirm we're proceeding to the plan we agreed before a single tool came out.
Set out to the millimetre. Using lasers, every tap, fixture and accessory is marked to its exact final position before any new work goes in. Nothing is decided on the fly later.
Rough-in, in sequence. Plumbing, electrical and carpentry — one trade at a time, not stacked on top of each other. The frame is straightened and reinforced, with blockings and noggings added everywhere an accessory or shower screen will eventually mount, so nothing is ever fixed to tile alone. Niches are formed. On brick — common in the older North Shore homes we work on — we check the wall is sound, paying attention to the soft lime mortar in period houses, which is weaker than modern cement and needs care.
Wall preparation and the board that sets us apart. Brick walls are rendered square, level and true; timber is realigned and sheeted. And here we use Marmox — a high-performance tile-backer board with a waterproof, impermeable core. The distinction matters: ordinary fibre-cement board (often called villa board) is only moisture-resistant, while Marmox is genuinely waterproof, insulates the wall to reduce condensation and mould, and acts as a decoupling layer that stops tiles and grout cracking. It's the standard across the UK and Europe, and it's what we build with. Water-resistant plasterboard is never accepted on a Scalso job, and where villa board is used, it's 9mm, never the flimsy 6mm that flexes under large tiles.
The second inspection — the pre-lining check. Before a single wall is closed, every height, every tap position and the entire set-out is verified in person. This is the critical hold-point of the whole renovation, because once the walls are sealed and waterproofed, fixing a mistake means tearing it all open again. Catching it now costs minutes. Catching it later costs thousands.
Two full inspections, a laser set-out and proper board selection — all in week one. Every one of them is a step the two-week crowd doesn't have time for.

Week 2: Waterproofing and screed — the week you pay for in silence if it's rushed
If week one is the most important week, week two is the most misunderstood. This is where the cheap jobs fail, and where you can't see it happening.
We waterproof in stages — under the screed and over it. Most builders membrane on top of the screed only. We seal the substrate first, lay the screed onto a waterproofed base, then membrane again on top, so the screed itself sits inside the waterproofing and water can never sit in the bed.
Here is the actual sequence, with the cure times that make it honest:
Prime the prepared, cleaned surface — then leave it to dry a full 24 hours.
Apply the polyurethane membrane and install the waterstop angles, horizontal and vertical, positioned exactly where the planned layout places them around the shower and doors — then dry 24 to 48 hours.
Lay the screed, working in the falls to Australian Standard — a 1:80 fall to the waste, to NCC requirements — then let it cure a full 72 hours.
Apply the final membrane coat over the cured screed — then dry another 24 to 48 hours.
Add it up and that's six to eight days of drying in week two alone, none of it optional, all of it dictated by the materials rather than the schedule. This is the concrete reason a two-week bathroom can't include proper waterproofing. We're not slower than the cowboys — we're the only ones letting it cure.
Underfloor heating, while we're here. Roughly 8 in 10 of our bathrooms include it, fitted in this stage — waterproofing below, heating, then screed on top. It does far more than warm your feet on a cold morning: it helps the screed dry, keeps the room and floors dry after every shower, and reduces the damp that feeds mould. It's app-controlled, set from your phone, and in years of installing it we've never had a single client wish they'd skipped it.

Week 3: Tiling — where the craftsmanship shows
By week three, the room is sealed and stable, and the work becomes visible. This is the stage people picture when they imagine a renovation — and it's where the difference between a tiler and a craftsman becomes obvious.
It starts with a meeting, not a tile. Before anything is laid, the layout is reviewed against the plans and 3D drawings to set out exactly how the tiles will run — so you don't end up with awkward slivers and clumsy cuts in the places your eye lands first. Even tiling begins with planning.
Floors first, then a check. The floor is tiled, then inspected for drainage and finished to the standard before the walls begin. Walls next — with every tap and accessory on site, so each hole is cut to the exact size, never oversized and ugly, never too tight.
The finishing details are where experience speaks. Where two tiled surfaces meet, we mitre the edges at 45 degrees rather than hiding them behind a cheap trim — and we finish those mitres with epoxy, not grout, because grout cracks on a mitre. And the door threshold is never grouted. That line moves constantly, with people stepping in and out and shoes catching the edge, so grout there always fails. It gets a flexible silicone joint instead — laid not by the tiler, but by a dedicated caulking specialist who does nothing but silicone, day in and day out. Most builders grout everything and watch it crack. Understanding where a floor moves is the kind of detail that separates a finish that lasts from one that doesn't.

Week 4: Fit-off, finishing, and handover
The final week is where everything comes together — and where the careful preparation from week one quietly pays off.
The caulker goes first, sealing the internal corners before any vanity, bath or accessory can block them — in colours chosen during the design, whether matched to the tile or a considered contrast.
Then fit-off, in sequence — and here's where those early inspections matter: we work from a recorded map of where every block, stud and joist sits, so nothing is hung on hope. Carpentry installs the vanity, cabinetry, doors and accessories, drilled and fixed into solid framing. Plumbing sets the toilet, taps, shower and basin. Electrical connects the lighting, power, switches and heated towel rail.
Painting finishes any untitled walls, the doors, architraves and windows. The caulker returns to seal around the newly installed vanity and toilet. Then a professional construction-clean specialist, not a quick wipe-down, removes the floor protection, dust barriers and every last piece of debris.
Finally, the handover. We walk through the home together against a detailed handover checklist, item by item, and it's signed off by both of us only when you're genuinely happy. The job isn't finished when the tiling is done. It's finished when you're standing in a bathroom you'd be proud to show anyone.

So, how long should your renovation take?
A cosmetic refresh — same layout, tiles staying — can be done in roughly one to two weeks.
A full strip-out and rebuild runs three to four weeks on site, plus one to three weeks of planning beforehand.
Structural changes, custom joinery or a second room push it longer.
And if anyone offers you a complete strip-out and rebuild in two weeks, treat it as useful information about how they work — and believe them.

How long does a bathroom renovation take? A full bathroom renovation in Sydney typically takes three to six weeks: three to four weeks of on-site work, plus one to three weeks of planning, design and ordering beforehand. A cosmetic refresh that keeps the existing layout can be done in one to two weeks.
Can a bathroom really be renovated in two weeks? Not a full strip-out and rebuild. The waterproofing and screed alone require six to eight days of mandatory curing before tiling can begin. Fixing it properly means removing tiles and re-waterproofing — and if the water has spread, rectification can run into tens of thousands of dollars.
Do you install underfloor heating? Yes — around 8 in 10 of our bathrooms include it. Beyond comfort, it helps dry the screed and the floors, reduces damp and mould, and is controlled from your phone. In years of installing it, no client has regretted it.
What makes one bathroom renovation last longer than another? The parts you can't see: proper site protection, two structural inspections, waterproofing applied under and over the screed and given time to cure, the right backer board, falls set to standard, and movement joints finished in silicone rather than rigid grout. Done correctly, none of it is visible — which is exactly why it's the first thing cut by anyone racing the clock.
